members of the club are featuring in them.
For the Oceania Games in Saipan, Mariannas Islands - Kathryn Kennedy,
Olivia Blundell & Nathan Barratt (who has withdrawn)
For the 3rd Commonwealth Youth Games in Pune, India 12-18 October - Ryan
Tinkle and Anna Roche
For the Down Under Track and Field Meet, Gold Coast, Australia - Tim
Cornish and Katherine Vance.
The club congratulates these younger members on their nominations.
the popular Battle Hill farm course.
The club highlight was a convincing win by the crack Junior Women's
team with stars Barbara Roy and Hayley Green recording the first and
second fastest times. The Junior Men ran very even times, but could not
holds out the fast finishing Scottish team. It was good to see some new
faces in the Under 13 races where the Boys team came second (with Nick
Lucie-Smith third fastest) and the Girls team third. Both the Senior and
Masters Mens teams had to settle for second, with Dan Nixon and Dean
Patten putting in top runs. Sadly the club was not represented in either
the Senior or Masters Women's races. Thanks to the Olympic Club for
hosting the event.
A quick look at the Rotorua Marathon results revealed some top runs by
the club representatives. In a field of 1484 entrants, Gordon Clarke
recorded a top 60 placing with his 3.03, and 7th in his grade. Another to
run a top 10 in his grade was Chris Hansen with a 3.28. Debutante
marathoner David Green estimated a 2.30 time ("I can't run for any longer
than that") but must have been thrilled at breaking 3.30. Peter Corbett,
after a long break from marathons, did his personal best Masters time,
although some way outside his overall best.

We look forward to welcoming new and returning members over the next few

Athletics NZ Championships 2008
Monday, March 31, 2008 12:14 PM
Track, Ericson Stadium, Auckland from 28 to 30 March. The weather was
fine – humid and warm with mixed winds depending on the time of the day.
One disappointment was the poor lighting on the bends, which saw
difficulties for some of the athletes in evening events. Club members
achieved a total of 15 medals and one new NZ record.
The new record, in the M16 hammer is held by Ryan Tinkle, who was one of
the more successful competitors at the meet winning 2 gold and 2 silver
medals. Golds were in the M19 and M16 Hammer, and the Silvers in the M16
Discus and shotput.
Other winners of gold medals were Kathryn Kennedy W16 Triple jump (a new
PB by nearly 30cm), and Nathan Barrett M16 1500m – a thrilling tussle as
Nathan fought it out with Corey Casey.
Other Silver medals were gained by Anna Roche (W16 800m), Olivia
Blundell (W16 100m hurdles), Billy Crayford (Open Mens High Jump), Dan
Parker (Open Mens Hammer).
Bronze medals were won by Alison Samson (W19 3000m walk), Bobby Rose
Girven Russell (W16 Long Jump), Nick Bingham (M16 3000m), Dave Lane
(Open Mens Triple Jump) and Simon Rogers (M19 800m).
Our congratulations to all our medalists, and to all those who competed
at the Champs.
On a different note, the track season is all but finished for the year,
with just the North Island Secondary Schools meet at the Douglas track
in Waitakere City next weekend. Our congratulations to Alison Samson,
who has been named Girls team captain for the event. A conderable number
of our secondary school age members will be taking part in this meet.
Track and Field prize giving will be held in the WHAC Clubrooms,
Alexandra Road, at 5pm on the 12th April - following the opening day
event for the harrier season. Attendees are requested to bring a plate.

Regional League - Round Three
Sunday, December 16, 2007 10:04 AM
It was a fine and sunny day – and rather warm, but the team did well –
on the provisional results we won the day and the competition….. but
this is not a final result – and Manawatu are complaining that they have
been unfairly penalised by not having points allocated for certain
events…. Those with memories will recall that we were disadvantage by
some timing problems as well….
The women comprehensively outpointed the guys – well done – with the top
scoring performance being Veronica Gould's 100m which scored 939 – which
probably supports our contention that "we wus robbed" in the Wellington
meet when the timing system failed for Veronica's heat ! Veronica also
scored well in the long jump – 888 points. Louise Hosegood did good as
well in the 100 & 200m – and then was part of our winning 4 x 100 team.
The women topped their pool with a total of 12653 points.
For the guys, Simon Rogers top scored with his 800m bringing in 843
points, just pipping Andrew Matsuoka-Webbers 835 for the 400m – then it
was down to the field eventers, with Bill Crayford and Ryan Tinkle
featuring. The mens team placed third overall, with 11104 points. (Full
list of scorers below).
Provisional Final points for the day
Wellington 11104 12653 23757 1st
Hastings 11251 11980 23231 2nd
Manawatu 11347 11583 22930 3rd
Wanganui 10622 11709 22331 4th
Wairarapa 9912 11726 21638 5th
Taranaki 10074 10147 20221 6th
As can be seen, the spread of points across the teams is fairly even,
and the final outcome is often in doubt to the last, so to my mind, the
League is an excellent concept that can only encourage the growth and
development our sport. We await the final points wash up with interest !
New Zealand Secondary Schools Athletics Champs
Saturday, December 15, 2007 9:14 AM
this major event on the athletics calendar. Conditions were pretty good
– although the high jumpers had a bit of trouble with the wind on
Saturday afternoon. It was fairly warm as well but not as hot as
Palmerston North the weekend before.Standout performer was Ryan Tinkle
(Wellington College) with two Golds and a Bronze – first in Junior Boys
Hammer and Discus, third in Shot Put. The other Gold medals went to
Nathan Barrett (Scots) in the Junior Boys 4000m road race, James
Hutchens (Scots) in the Junior Boys Long Jump and Anna Roche (Marsden)
in the Junior Girls 800m.
Silver medals were awarded to Kathryn Kennedy (Wellington Girls) in the
Senior 400m, Bobby Rose Girven Russell (Wellington East) Junior Girls
Long Jump, and Nicholas Bingham (Scots) in the Junior Boys 3000m.
Alison Samson (St Catherines) won Bronze in the Open Girls 2000m walk,
and the event was was finished in fine style when the Wellington Girls
College senior 4 x 400m relay team were just edged out of Gold, to take
home the Silver medal in the penultimate event. The team was all WHAC –
Alice Feslier-Holmes, Barbara Roy, Hannah Farrelly and Kathryn Kennedy.
2nd Regional Teams Meet
Wednesday, November 21, 2007 10:02 PM
Newtown Park turned on an excellent day for the second round meet. Fine
and warm, with not too much wind – yes we are talking about Wellington.
The formal part of the day started with speeches from various folk,
including the Mayor, to mark the completion of the development works at
the park. This was followed by a celebrity sprint – not all starters
finished – and then the Mayor sent off the first event on the programme
– the 3000m walk.
There were more teams competing at this event than turned out at
Hastings – two composite teams comprising mostly younger athletes, and a
small squad from Karori. Valleys United were present, but lacked the
numbers of previous years, losing athletes to the new Mid Valley club
which combined with other Hutt based children's clubs to field a team.
At the end of the day WHAC were the overall winners – the men winning
their side of the competition with a score of 12800 and the women
finishing 3^rd despite scoring 14953, to give us a total of 27753 – a
bare 56 points ahead of second placed Manawatu. After two rounds (If the
scoring follows previous years) we are running second on 4 points to
Manawatu, who won at Hastings, on 3. Third is Wanganui on 7, closely
followed by Hastings on 8. As I've already noted the new format of the
competition which is based on the quality of performances rather than
the quantity, is proving excellent.
In the womens team 5 members scored over 1000 points for their events,
and in the men 3 passed the magic mark. Unfortunately some of our better
performances haven't been scored – partly due to problems with timing at
the Park, and partly because some events haven't been scored, despite
indications prior to the meet that they would be. Hopefully these issues
will not recur at Palmerston North.

Regional League gets underway for 2007
Monday, November 05, 2007 12:58 PM
the first meet of the new Regional League. This year the competition is
running under different rules, and rather than have 2 open and 1
development grade places in each event, there is open entry to all
events. The scoring is based on the IAAF multi event scoring but with an
age based factoring system. This changes the focus of the meet from
quantity to quality. For example Veronica Gould scored highly in the 100
due to her being in the W55 bracket, while Tyler White scored well for
her W14 grading.
Top scorer on the day for the team was Olivia Blundell with 4148 points
– next was Ryan Tinkle with 3096 points. Total points scored were women
13775 points, men 12002, giving us 25777 – and 3^rd place overall behind
Manawatu and Hastings. We were also the only Wellington based club to
field a full team – individual athletes from Scottish and Valleys took
part, but each team needs a minimum of 8 male and 8 female competitors.
Interestingly the former Central team has split – with a team each from
Wanganui and Palmerston North. Taranaki is still competing as a team, as
is the Wairarapa.
From my observations the competition is more even than previous years –
with only 2250 points separating the top 5 teams – and when you consider
that a good performance is worth over 1000 points, the winning team at
the end of the day, and at the end of the series will always be in doubt
to the last event !
The next meeting is in Wellington on the November 17^th , and the third
meet will be in Palmerston North on 1 December. Will we see you at these
meets ?
If you do plan to attend – entry to track events is turn up when called,
but for field events (to allow for the printing off of the entry sheets)
we need to know in advance who is planning to compete at least 30
minutes beforehand, please let your team manager (Peter Rendall) know in
plenty of time.

College League Day 3 Report
Monday, October 29, 2007 10:08 PM
day on Saturday with cold southerly showers sweeping the ground. This
saw numbers slightly below expectations, but there were some 77
competitors from 17 schools braving the elements. In the girls schools
competition, Wellington Girls came out on top for the day with 213
points, St Catherine's were second equal with Tawa College Girls on 139
points.
For the boys, Wellington College scored 200 points, from a late run by
Silverstream with 162, Scots also made a late burst scoring 93, and the
Tawa College boys made 74.
Raw points for the three days are:
Girls Boys
Wellington Girls 618 Wellington College 696
St Catherines 378 Rongotai College 372
Tawa College Girls 217 Silverstream 338
As indicated in the Competition Rules, a weighting factor will be
applied to equalize team size. The final results will be available at
the prize giving on 10 November.
In the Individual "MVP" competition, the overall winner was Alison
Samson of St Catherines, who, determined to win, competed in every event
last Saturday, to score a total of 181. Runner up in the girls was Kelly
Hanlon from Wellington Girls who contributed 137 points. Third, also
from St Catherine's was Harriett Sowman with 132 points and 4^th ., from
WGC, was Casey Flint, with 87 points. For the boys, Ryan Tinkle top
scored with 113, chased by Stewart Hancock with 98.
The third category we recognize is the top performance by a male and
female athlete. This is being worked out from the IAAF Multi events
scoring table and going through the results is proving time consuming.
The winners will be announced at the prizegiving.
Thanks for competing, and thanks also to those who officiated and who
assisted on the administrative side. Without your support the CAL
wouldn't happen ! Thanks also to Shell Petroleum Exploration who have
provided ongoing support to this competition since its inception.
Jess Penney moves to Illinois
Tuesday, October 23, 2007 7:39 AM
moved to the USA where she has taken up a sports scholarship at the
University of Illinois to study Civil Engineering. Starting her
athletics career with the Karori club, while a student at Marsden
Collegiate, she joined the club about the same time she shifted to
Wellington Girls College. A talented musician, it was a toss up between
music and the track - fortunately for us track won, and Jess has been a
valued member of our team for the last three seasons. Coached by Mike
Beable, she has performed very well in local, national and international
events.
In Aug 2006 Jess came 5th in the IAAF World Junior Games in Beijing and
broke a New Zealand U20yrs long jump record (a long standing 15yr
record) with a jump of 6.37m. This jump also qualified her for the
World University Games in Bangkok. In 2006 she was also ranked 10th in
the World Junior Rankings in Long Jump that year, named Athletics New
Zealand Junior Female Athlete of the Year, awarded the Air New Zealand
Inspiring Young New Zealanders award and named as a member of the NZ
women's 4 x 100 relay team.
We wish Jess all the best in her future careers - both on the track and
as a student engineer (hmmm wonder if engineering students are the same
there as they are here ?) and will watch the US results with interest
A Report on Last Weekend
Monday, October 22, 2007 7:33 PM
College League on Saturday - my thanks to those who came along and
helped - especially the mums whose daughters are no longer active in the
club......
* There is a meeting for all who plan to run on the track this
summer at 5pm on Saturday 27th, in the meeting room at Newtown
Park. This will include the prize giving for last season, and
discussion about whats to happen for the balance of the season.
Some refreshments will be provided.
* The Regional League kicks off with a meet in Hastings on 1
December. If you wish to compete please contact Peter Rendall
asap. If you need transport up, a 20 seat bus will be leaving the
Cenotaph at 5.30pm on Friday 30 November. The overnight stop will
be in Dannevirke. We are trying to keep the cost down to no more
than $50 a head for transport and accommodation. Again if you want
to come with us, contact PR asap - its first in best dressed, so
once we get to 20 bods, thats it - any others will need to make
their own way up to Nelson Park. We will return on Saturday
evening after the end of the meet.
* Summer subs are due now. If you want to be considered for the
League team you need to be financial.
* Alison Samson headed up to Hastings for the ANZ Long Distance
Walks Champs, and collected the Silver Medal in the W19 15km walk,
in her first outing over this distance. Well done Ali !
The second day of the 2007 College Athletics League was held on Saturday
20 October. 86 athletes from 18 schools competed, and good fields were
seen in most events (except the 300/400 hurdles which had no entrants…
and the Pole Vault with just 1 competitor).
After two rounds the scores are as follow:
Boys Girls
Wellington College 496 Wellington Girls College 405
Rongotai 308 St Catherines 239
Silversteam 176 Queen Margaret 88
Scots 126 Tawa College 78
Tawa College 123 Marsden 76
St Pats Town 106
In the individual Most Valuable team member, for the girls, leading
still is Ali Samson (St Catherines 88), from Kelly Hanlon (WGC 86),
Casey Flint (WGC 71) and Sapphire Cavie (Taita College) on 68. For the
boys, Stewart Hancock (Coll 86) has eased past Ryan Tinkle (Coll 80),
and then there are quite a number of competitors in the 30's. It's
really encouraging to see that the bulk of the team players are WHAC
members....

Wednesday, October 17, 2007 10:43 PM
first day's competition in the 2007 College Athletics League. This was
a little down of first day numbers from last season, but indications are
that numbers will be up substantially on Day 2. After the first day,
the school rankings are as follow (but remember that the organisers may
impose a weighting to take account of school size):
Boys :- Leading are Wellington College with 297 points. Second are
Rongotai with 165, third Silversteam with 64 and fourth Scots with 57.
Girls :- Out in front just are St Catherines on 149, followed by
Wellington Girls on 138, and third Queen Margaret with 50.
In the MVP stakes, for the Boys, Ryan Tinkle (WC) is out in front,
followed by Stuart Hancock (WC) and Leota Rome (RO). In the Girls (and
outright leader) is Alison Samson (St Caths), followed by Kelly Hanlon
(WG) and Sapphire Cavey (TTC).... if Sapphire can talk to the meeting
manager next Saturday and clarify what school she's at it would be
appreciated. ( And girls Ali's away at the Long Distance Walks Champs
this weekend in Hastings so you have a chance to catch up.)
Most notable performance on the day was in the Discus, where Ryan Tinkle
threw a massive 54.87 metres. Well done Ryan.

More on Marton to Wanganui
Sunday, September 16, 2007 10:06 AM
(well 9 girls and a boy) finished 8th overall, which is a good result
given the other teams were mainly adults....
Marton to Wanganui Relay
Tuesday, September 11, 2007 11:10 AM
the Marton to Wanganui Relay. This long established event has had a
change of course since we last had a run over it - the original course
ran the main road from Marton to Turakina via Bonny Glen, and then along
SH3 to the River City. Recognising that traffic of the SH3 is now
hazardous, the relay now heads inland from Marton, and crosses the
Turakina and Whangaehu rivers much higher up than before. The relay is
now 10 laps, ranging in length from 2.8km to 8.9km, for a total of
66.37kms. We don't know where we finished yet - top 10 - in 4.57.28
(thats an average of 4.29 a km) - not bad for a team with and average
age of 14.7 years ! Oh, and that short lap - its steep uphill all the
way ! The rest is pretty good running.
