JuniorsIn the winter season (April to October) juniors are welcome to come along to the clubrooms and participate with the Harriers Section. On saturdays at the clubrooms there are special activities for youngsters, with which they are encouraged to improve their fitness. There is always a large and enthusiastic presence of junior runners at the harriers cross country and road races during the winter. In the summer (October to April), the Children's section is active - providing basic skills and Track & Field events for youngsters aged 7 to 14. It's run by parents and other adults with an athletics background for the benefit of children in the Wellington City area. Our main catchments for members are the central, southern and eastern suburbs of the city, but we welcome any children who wish to join no matter where they live. Where to find usWe meet at the Newtown Park Athletics Ground at the top of Riddiford St, also near the zoo entrance, in Newtown. When we meetSaturdays from 11.30am to 1.30pm. With regard to Interclub meets, there are 6 formal ones, one ribbon day, and the Wellington Centre championships. There are also the Colgate Games - effectively the national children's championships, which can be entered by any athlete. Dates of these competitions can be found on the calendar page Who can belongAny children aged from 7 to 14 years old may belong. However, we do also take children from 5 up, and although we try to include them in all our activities, there are only running events for 5's and 6's at Interclubs, and they are not catered for at all at the Regional Champs. In recognition of this we charge a reduced subscription. UniformOur club uniform consists of the blue "Wellington" singlet or blue "Wellington" lycra crop top. Shorts will be Navy Blue shorts/bike shorts or black shorts/bike shorts. We don't mind the wearing of non-uniform gear on club days, but please ensure that the child's clothing and footwear is appropriate Tee shirts and shorts, with a warm top and/or trackpants are acceptable. Footwear - please NO basketball style boots - these are potentially dangerous when worn for running. Many children participate in bare feet, or wear sneaker type shoes. Please don't rush out and buy spiked running shoes - talk to us first. Spiked shoes are only permitted for children in grade 10 and above, and we sometimes have pairs of shoes available.
