WHAC - Club Information and Activities
Whether you're the fastest runner around, or simply looking for friends and fitness, WHAC is the club that has something for you.
We are a large club which offers opportunities to get together with others interested in fitness, plus access to top quality coaching.
For the serious athlete you can be part of one of the most successful athletic clubs in New Zealand.
The club was founded as 'Wellington Harrier Club' in 1903 - it was the first harrier club in the city. In 1995 Wellington Track and Field
Club was Founded, and amalgamated with the Harrier Club to form Wellington Harrier Athletic Club in 1997. In 2002 Kiwi Children's
Athlec Club was renamed as Wellington Children's Athletics and amalgamated with WHAC, so that the club now fully caters for all three
branches of the sport - running, Track and Field and Children's Athletics. In 2003 the club
celebrated its centenary with a range of activities, including a re-enactment of the first 1903 club pack run from the Basin Reserve. The
event was marked with the unveiling of a plaque at the Basin (pictured).
The club operates all year round and is organised into three sections
- Harrier Section This is mainly concerned with cross country running, road running, mountain running
and walking. The main activity is the Saturday afternoon pack run - in which groups of similar ability run or walk together as a group.
The other main focus is participation in inter-club cross country and road running. Annual highlights are the club trips to the
North Island Cross Country Championships and the National Road Relay.
- Track & Field Section This is concerned with track running, jumping and throwing, the traditional Olympic
events. The main activity of this section is midweek coaching and participation in the Wellington Interclub meetings at Newtown Park. An annual feature is
the National Teams Competition, in which members compete to score points for the club, and win the right to compete at the national
final.
- Children's section This is concerned with basic skills and track & field for ages 7 to 14. The main
activities are the Saturday club meetings, and participation in inter-club competitions around Wellington on the weekends. The annual
highlights are travel to the North Island Colgate Games, and competition in the Wellington Children's Championships.
The club also has a range of social activities throughout the year, together with informal training groups which meet around Wellington
during the week and on the weekends.
