First up ...

(1) A late result just in from Julie ref the NI Colgate Games ... Ari Koed Chang, 1st Boys 13 Long Jump with a whopping 5.97 metres. Outstanding, Ari -- well done!

And congratulations to Saskia Cosgrove-Drayton, 3rd Girls 14 in the 1500m at the South Island Colgate Games.

(2) Vosseler matter? WHAC women are urged to be on the lookout for an important email concerning the 2018 Vosseler. We encourage all Senior and Masters Women to vote and comment!

(3) Have you lost what Hewi found? A medium-size WHAC hoodie in his ute. It might just be yours ... all good.

Peter Rendall's weekly message

A look over the fence at Newtown Park (today, Monday 15th January)  makes me suspect access to the track won't be this week.  Work on putting the top surface on the main straight is underway, but large amounts of surface rubber need to be swept up and removed elsewhere on the track.  Then the inside rail needs to be reinstated and all lane markings etc. painted.  Maybe next week if the weather holds.

Hopefully next time the re-lay can disrupt soccer instead of killing the athletics summer season.  We should, perhaps (along with other athletic clubs and groups who utilise the track), make representation to Wellington City Council regarding future re-lay timetables, though it has to be conceded that this is a weather-dependent project and boy, have we had some good re-laying weather this time around!  Will be nice to have a good surface, but we are losing/have lost nearly 2 months at the peak of the season. But what's the point [of a good track] if the sport dies through lack of facilities ...  the alternative grass tracks available at Ben Burn and Nairnville have surfaces like concrete, and the Ben Burn long jump pit is rock-like.

Friendly reminder: ALL queries relating to Track & Field should be directed to Peter.

His email address is in the Club Contacts section near the foot of the newsletter.

Newtown Park -- Track stuff

Resurfacing of the running track will take approximately 21 days to complete (started 30 November). Given that the work is weather-dependent, a 42-day track-closure period has been pencilled in. *** Click on this link re a note around unforseen timetable-completion issues ***

Laura Harkerss advises that Grenada North, Ben Burn and Nairnville all have marked running tracks that can be used when available.

Note that while the track and park will be closed during this work, the function room will still be available for bookings.

If any member has questions regarding this project please contact Customer Liaison Officer Lauren Harkerss (lauren.harkerss@wcc.govt.nz) or project manager Peter Hemsley (Peter.Hemsley@wcc.govt.nz).

Honest 10, Sunday 21 January 2018 -- from the Wind Needle

This weekend. Please see note below, 3rd para., re volunteers required -- contact Gabby or Dave for an update on the current situation.

Monday the 22nd is Wellington Anniversary Day, a regional public holiday, and the weekend is looking busy. As Gabby O'Rourke puts it, "[H10] Should be a good event as we're hoping to get a few people here supporting friends taking part in the Capital Classic. The Capital Classic has been moved from Friday to Saturday night so hopefully will help boost our numbers despite it being a holiday weekend. Expecting a few overseas visitors as well so would be good to have a strong WHAC showing (either running or helping).

As ever, the club is reliant on its members for support with registration, time-keeping, marshalling, pacing and photography (Brendon does). If you can help with pacing, please email David Carrigan (taxingefox@gmail.com). For everything else, please email Gabby (gabbyor125@gmail.com). Briefly: help with registration from 8:15–9am; manning the 5K turnaround point at Freyberg from 9:10–9:45; similarly the 2.5K turnaround (for the 5Kers) from 8:45–10; and the Finish line from 9:15–10. Thanks!
